Chapter 22

Getting time off was no problem for Lexie. Everyone understood the need to grab those few precious moments together and Lexie would have left nursing rather than miss spending the time with him. Even her fellow nurse roommates looked after her; moving to other quarters and leaving Lexie to have their small and crowded room for herself and James.

Lexie wanted to make love but James had protested. Lexie was more pragmatic.

‘I want to give myself to you,’ she assured him. ‘It’s a different world now from our champagne days. We’ll never have that again and I want us to feel love, make love and share this now.’

James agreed, ‘War makes you want to grab every precious moment. But we’ll have plenty of time, the rest of our lives, to make love. I want to get married now … today!’

‘Today!’ Lexie exclaimed.

‘Yes. I want you to be my wife when I leave. We can still have the big celebration when the war is over. Marry me now, Lex?’

Lexie gasped. ‘Yes, of course,’ she said excitedly, ‘it’s the best idea I’ve heard since you proposed!’

James grabbed her and spun her around. She pummelled his shoulders until he put her down.

Lexie continued. ‘But we haven’t got our banns … if we visit the vicar now and he reads them out at mass tomorrow morning, we could get married in the afternoon.’

‘Or we could get a special marriage licence … I heard someone on board a ship did that because they didn’t have time for banns.’ James shrugged.

‘Maybe, but let’s try the vicar first—I’m sure he will do that for us—he has done quite a few ceremonies in the last few months. Then, my love, our last day-and-a-half together can be our unofficial honeymoon. I want us to squeeze everything we can in this little window of time so we have happy memories to hold us together … to help replace some of the gruesome …’ she didn’t need to say more. ‘I want you to have all of me.’

‘I want that more than you know,’ James said.

Lexie began to plan. ‘We won’t have time to get Mother and Carrie here, and it is best that Father doesn’t hear anyway, he might try and stop it.’

‘I agree,’ James said. ‘Just ask Kitty if she will be one of our witnesses and maybe Esther or Fran … Frances?’ he stumbled recalling her friend’s name.

‘Franny.’ Lexie nodded.

‘As long as you and I are there,’ he said.

‘Yes.’ Lexie embraced him. ‘Perfect.’
